Kimono rental in Asakusa at a glance
Several shops around Asakusa rent kimonos by the day. You choose a set, a member of staff helps you dress, and you walk through the district in it. Nothing at Senso-ji requires a kimono. It is an optional experience, mainly for photos and for the fun of it.
The prices below come from one Asakusa shop, Rikawafuku, and show what a basic plan costs there in 2026. They are an example, not an average for the whole district. Other shops have their own plans, hours and terms.

How a rental day works
From booking to return.
Booking
The shop takes online bookings up to 10 minutes before your chosen time. That does not mean every shop works that way, so read the terms of the plan you pick, including the cancellation rules.
Opening times
The shop opens from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The last dressing is accepted at 4 p.m. Late arrivals leave little time before the return deadline.
Dressing
Dressing and handover usually take 45 to 70 minutes. Staff do the dressing for you, so accept the help.
Return
The latest return is 5:30 p.m., whatever time you start. Plan your route through the district so that you are back before then.
Season
From about mid-June to September the plan offers a yukata, the lighter summer garment. In the other months you get a kimono that suits the season.
Wearing a kimono at the temple
Treat the visit like any other. Senso-ji is an active place of worship, so the usual guidance applies to you as well: keep your voice low, follow the signs and let people pray. Our etiquette page explains the water basin, the incense burner and the main hall.
Renting a kimono does not give you permission for a commercial photo shoot on the grounds. For a few phone photos, step to the side so that you do not block the path.
Walk shorter steps than usual. Stairs and crowded streets are harder in a kimono, and Nakamise-dori can be full. Our Nakamise-dori guide shows what the street is like.

Kimono rental in Asakusa: frequently asked questions
How much does a kimono rental cost in Asakusa?
One Asakusa shop lists JPY 4,500 for its basic plan in 2026, tax included. A plan with hairstyling is JPY 6,500, a student plan JPY 5,500 and a couple plan JPY 11,000 for the pair. Other shops set their own prices.
Do I need to wear a kimono to enter Senso-ji?
No. A kimono is an optional experience. Wear clothes that are comfortable for walking and respectful at a temple.
How long does it take to get dressed?
Dressing and handover usually take 45 to 70 minutes. The last dressing is accepted at 4 p.m., and the kimono has to be back by 5:30 p.m.
Can I rent a kimono for a short visit?
The latest return is 5:30 p.m. regardless of your start time, so an early start gives you more time. With dressing taking up to 70 minutes, a rental makes sense for a few hours rather than a quick stop.
Is hairstyling included?
Not in the basic plan. The plan with hairstyling is listed at JPY 6,500.
Can I take photos in my kimono at Senso-ji?
Step aside so you do not block others. A rental does not give you permission for a commercial shoot. In the main hall, follow the signs and ask staff if you are unsure.
