Four private walks around Senso-ji, compared

Quiet backstreets and the underground shopping street

This is the shortest way to a private guide: 90 minutes for USD 28 per person, or USD 56 for a couple and USD 112 for four. It starts at the Starbucks in front of Asakusa Station and combines the underground shopping street with a visit to Senso-ji and photo spots for your own phone. The sweets tasting is not included. It suits first-time visitors.

Ritual guidance on a 75 minute route

For USD 44 per person you meet at the Kaminarimon and follow the line from the gate through Nakamise to Senso-ji, then on to Denpoin Street and Hoppy Street. The guide shows the incense and cleansing etiquette at the temple. Food, drinks and your way to the meeting point are extra. Choose it to take part in the ritual rather than watch.

Two hours with three food stops

At USD 48 per person this walk covers Asakusa, Senso-ji and Kappabashi Street and adds three local foods, with photos sent to you afterwards. It starts near Tobu Asakusa Station. A pair of friends pays USD 96. That is USD 24 per hour, against about USD 35 per hour for the 75 minute walk.

Asakusa, Ueno and Yanaka in one day

The longest option runs 4 to 9 hours for USD 68 per person, with an English-speaking guide through Asakusa, Ueno, Yanaka and Nezu. You also learn how to move through Tokyo's subway. Meals, fares and admission fees are not included. Pick it when Senso-ji is one stop in a wider day, for example on a second visit to Tokyo.

Private or the free guided walk: when sharing is enough

TOKYO SGG CLUB runs a free guided walk of about 90 minutes around Senso-ji. You meet at the counter on the ground floor of the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center opposite the Kaminarimon and arrive 10 minutes early. Places go in order of arrival, and a walk can be cancelled at short notice. If your morning is flexible and you want only the outline of the temple, that is enough.

A private booking suits you when the start time matters, when children or older relatives set the pace, or when food or Old Tokyo is the topic. The main hall is open from 6:00 to 17:00 from April to September and from 6:30 to 17:00 from October to March, so a morning start leaves time for both the hall and the lanes behind it.
