Asakusa Tours Compared

The temple is free, so a tour is an add-on. This page compares the free walk, a paid food tour, rickshaws and boats, and what each one costs and covers.

Do you need a tour for Senso-ji?

No. A regular visit to Senso-ji is free and needs no booking, and the way from the Kaminarimon gate through Nakamise-dori to the main hall is easy to follow on your own. A tour adds a guide, a theme such as food, or a different way to move through Asakusa. It does not add admission, because there is no general admission ticket.

The options below fall into four groups: a free guided walk, a paid evening food tour, rickshaw rides and trips on the Sumida by water bus. Prices are in Japanese yen (JPY) as listed in 2026. Each example comes from a single provider, so it shows what one product costs and not a market range.

The options in detail

What each one involves.

The free guided walk

TOKYO SGG CLUB offers guided walks through Senso-ji and its surroundings, supported by Taito ward. They last about 90 minutes. You meet at the counter on the ground floor of the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center, opposite the Kaminarimon, and should arrive 10 minutes early. Places go in order of arrival and may be limited, and a walk can be cancelled at short notice. The calendar shows possible starts at 10:30 and 13:15, but not every slot runs on every day, so check the current calendar before you go.

The evening food tour

The Asakusa Twilight Evening Tour by Arigato Travel takes 3 hours and lists departures on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It includes tastings, 1 drink, dinner, matcha and dessert. Further food and drinks and transport are not included. The provider cannot guarantee allergen-free food because it uses other kitchens. Vegetarian and other changes need advance notice.

Nakamise-dori →

Rickshaw rides

The stand is east of the Kaminarimon on Kaminarimon-dori, and rides start from 9:30 and run into the evening, depending on the season. Prices are per vehicle, not per person. Rides of 30 minutes or more can be booked ahead, while the 12-minute ride cannot.

Water bus on the Sumida

TOKYO CRUISE sails from Asakusa to Hinode, Hama-rikyu and Odaiba. The Hama-rikyu fare of JPY 1,180 includes the garden entry. Odaiba trips are best reserved. Weather and water conditions can change or cancel sailings.

Kimono rental →

Your own route

What to check before you book

The wording differs more than the prices do.

What the price includes

A paid tour does not include temple admission, because there is none. Look at whether food, drinks, transport and a guide are part of the price.

The meeting point and the time

Asakusa has several stations called Asakusa, so read the meeting point carefully. For the free walk, the counter opposite the Kaminarimon is the place.

Language

Not every tour is offered in every language. Check the language of the guide for your date.

Cancellation terms

Terms differ by provider and cannot be carried over from one tour to another. Read them before you pay.

Staying elsewhere in Tokyo? Walking tours of other districts are covered in the Shibuya tours guide.

Asakusa tours: frequently asked questions

Is there a free tour of Senso-ji?

Yes. TOKYO SGG CLUB runs free guided walks of about 90 minutes. You meet at the information center opposite the Kaminarimon, 10 minutes before the start. Places depend on order of arrival, and some days have fewer slots.

Does a tour include entry to the temple?

There is nothing to include, because regular entry is free. What a paid tour adds is a guide, food, a ride or another activity.

How much does a rickshaw ride cost?

JPY 4,000 for 12 minutes with 1 adult, JPY 9,000 for 30 minutes and JPY 16,000 for 60 minutes. The price is per vehicle, and a ride with 2 adults costs JPY 1,000 to 4,000 more, depending on the length.

Are food tours suitable for allergies?

The food tour example cannot guarantee allergen-free dishes because it uses other kitchens. Vegetarian and other adjustments need advance notice.

Do I need to book a tour in advance?

There is no general rule. The free walk works by order of arrival, the 12-minute rickshaw ride cannot be reserved and the Odaiba water bus is best reserved. Check the provider's page for your date.
