Hotels in Asakusa: the short version

Two areas make sense for a Senso-ji trip. Asakusa is the district around the temple, with Nakamise-dori, the Sumida and several train lines. Ueno is a transport hub a short ride away, with its park and museums. Neither is the best choice for everyone. It depends on your plans, your luggage and your train connections.

This page names no hotels and quotes no room prices. Rates change by date, so look at the final price for your own nights, including local taxes, before you book.

Asakusa is the sensible pick if early or late visits to the temple matter to you. Ueno is the sensible pick if rail connections come first. Kappabashi lies on foot between the two areas, so you can walk from one to the other.

What decides the choice

Five things to check for any property.

The station exit, not the district

Four lines stop at Asakusa, and each has its own station. The hotel's address decides which one is closest. The Ginza Line exit 1 and the Toei exit A4 are the ones for the temple gate. The Tsukuba Express exit A1 is about 10 minutes from the area opposite the gate. See how to get to Senso-ji.

Early and late visits

The grounds are open around the clock. The main hall is open 06:00 to 17:00 from April to September and 06:30 to 17:00 from October to March. The buildings are lit from sunset until about 23:00, which is outside lighting only. A short walk helps if you want to be there at opening or after dark. Details are in the opening hours guide.

Step-free access

If you use a wheelchair or travel with a stroller, ask about the lift, the route from the station and the room size. A lift at one street entrance does not describe a whole step-free route.

Cancellation terms

Terms differ by property and by rate. Read them before you pay, especially if your dates depend on a festival.

The final price

Compare the total for your nights, including local taxes, not only the nightly rate shown first.

Dates, festivals and crowds

Pick your nights with the calendar in mind.

Sanja Matsuri

The festival is published for Friday to Sunday, 14 to 16 May 2027, with a ceremony on Thursday 13 May at 19:00. The dates can change. The streets are busy and traffic is restricted on the Sunday. See the Sanja Matsuri guide.

Hagoita-Ichi and Hozuki-Ichi

The Hagoita market runs from 17 to 19 December each year, and the Hozuki market on 9 and 10 July. Both are annual events at the temple.

New Year

New Year visits run from 1 to 7 January, with the heaviest crowds from 1 to 3 January. Visitors are guided along set routes, and Nakamise-dori can work as a one-way approach.

The weather

Long-term averages show April, May and November with lower daily highs than summer: about 19 °C in April, 24 °C in May and 17 °C in November, against 31 °C in August. September and October are the wettest months, so do not treat October as a dry month. These are averages, not forecasts. Cherry blossom dates for 2027 cannot be promised.

Where to stay near Senso-ji: frequently asked questions

Is Asakusa a good area to stay in?

It suits visitors who want the temple, Nakamise-dori and the river close by, and who value early or late visits. Whether it is the best area for you depends on your plans and train connections.

Is Ueno a good alternative?

Ueno is a rail hub with JR and Shinkansen connections and sits near Ueno Park and the museums. The Ginza Line takes about 5 minutes to Asakusa, so you stay near the temple without sleeping next to it.

How far is Ueno from Senso-ji?

About 5 minutes by Ginza Line to Asakusa. The adult fare is JPY 178 with an IC card or JPY 180 by ticket in 2026. Add the walk to the temple.

Which hotel should I book?

This guide names no hotels. Compare properties by the walk to the right station exit, the lift, the room size, the cancellation terms and the final price with local taxes.

Is Asakusa cheaper than Ueno?

That cannot be said in general. Prices depend on the date and the property, so compare the total for your own nights.

Should I avoid festival dates?

That is a matter of taste. Festival days are crowded and traffic is restricted. Know the dates and the road restrictions before you book.
